CELEBRATING PLACE THROUGH ART

JULIE PATERSON’S BANGALAY COLLECTION

At Bangalay Luxury Villas, every aspect of the guest experience has been thoughtfully curated to reflect and celebrate the unique landscape that surrounds us. One of the most admired expressions of this vision is the specially commissioned artwork created by renowned Australian artist Julie Paterson.

As part of the commission, Julie undertook an artist residency in Shoalhaven Heads, immersing herself in the local environment and spending time exploring the Bangalay Sand Forest, Seven Mile Beach and the Shoalhaven River. Through sketches and observations gathered during her residency, Julie developed a series of artworks that capture the essence of this remarkable landscape.

Created using layered screen-printing techniques on reclaimed building boards from the Bangalay construction process, the works celebrate the endangered Bangalay Sand Forest ecological community. The artworks feature native species including Bangalay eucalypts, Banksia integrifolia, Banksia serrata (Old Man Banksia), Lilly Pilly, Lomandra longifolia and Blue Flax Lily, while also recognising the habitat these environments provide for vulnerable and endangered wildlife.

The interplay of light and shadow beneath the towering eucalypt canopy, combined with the rich colours of the bush-to-beach landscape, is beautifully reflected throughout the collection.

Julie Paterson is one of Australia’s most respected contemporary artists, working across textiles, printmaking, sculpture and installation. Her work has been commissioned for some of Australia’s most iconic luxury destinations, including Longitude 131° in Uluru, Capella Lodge on Lord Howe Island and Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island.

The artworks continue to be one of the most talked-about features of the guest experience, with visitors regularly asking about the artist behind the collection.

For us, they represent far more than decoration - they are a celebration of place, sustainability, biodiversity and the natural beauty that makes Bangalay so special.
